Victorian Age Literature in the Light of Industrialization Essay Writers during the Victorian age wrote about the detrimental effects of the Industrial Revolution, traditional gender roles, and a failing adherence to morality. In their works, Victorian writers convey social unrest, which was aggravated by unyielding industry. Female authors were often more popular than their male counterparts, and often had to hide their authorship. For instance, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning gave a harsh critique of the Industrial Revolution, gender roles, and the decaying sense of morality during the Victorian period in her poem â€Å"The Cry of the Children. † The subject of her poem is the plight of young children, who were forced to labor in appalling conditions of industrialization. â€Å"They are weeping in the playtime of the others / In the country of the free† (11-12). This poetry by Browning typifies the way in which cognitive dissonance for child labor, as well as other social ills, was utilized by Victorian writers to admonish the wrong doings of society. Browning draws a close comparison between the control of men over the machine of industrialization in society and God’s plenary powers over humanity: â€Å"He is speechless as a stone / And they tell us, of His image the master / Who commands us to work on† (126-129). Furthermore, the poem focused on this paradox by contrasting the fact that, while Britain purports to be moral and free, the actual lives of those who should be the most protected and liberated, the children, are absolutely deplorable. Browning’s poetry also strongly exemplifies the way in which many Victorian authors incorporated, along with the criticism of industrialization, the subject of society’s faulty preconceptions of gender roles. The Trial in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee :: Kill Mockingbird essays

The Trial in To Kill a Mockingbird The trial of Tom takes up a great deal of space in the novel because it gives Harper Lee a chance to do an in-depth exploration of characters and situations. The people involved in the case are Bob and Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch. The alleged rape of Mayella by Tom allows Harper Lee to look in detail at issues of racial and social prejudice in Maycomb. Bob Ewell is the villain of the novel and, as a result of the trial, he tries to get revenge on Atticus and his family. In the trial itself he is revealed as a very unpleasant character. We learn that he drinks and sometimes leaves his family for days, he is violent and he may even be committing incest with Mayella. Atticus establishes that he is left-handed and that Mayella was probably beaten up by a left-handed man - it seems that he, and not Tom Robinson, beat up Mayella after he saw Mayella trying to kiss Tom. Bob therefore lies during the trial and is prepared to sacrifice the life of an innocent man for the sake of his daughter's reputation. His unpleasant behaviour during the trial and his assumption that everybody will be on his side against a black man convince the reader that he is a thoroughly unpleasant character. Mayella Ewing also lies in court but for different reasons to her father. She is the only responsible member of one of the poorest families in Maycomb. She looks after herself and her brothers and sisters and even tries to bring some beauty into their lives by growing geraniums. Her family is so poor that white people will have nothing to do with her and, at that time, it was not possible for her to be friendly with black people. Scout calls her "the loneliest person in the world". Tom Robinson passed her house every day on his way to work and, according to Scout, he was probably the only person who was ever nice to her. Tom's evidence at the trial shows that she had planned to make a pass at him for a long time. It took her nearly a year to save enough money to send all her brothers and sisters into town to get ice creams.

Brokeback Mountain personal response

Whilst watching the film Bareback Mountain, I became frustrated at the mall characters, Jack and Nines. This frustration was because of an evident idea in the film that I agree strongly with, Sexuality is not a choice. ‘ This idea made me realize how lucky I am to have been born in an era where society is much more accepting of individuality than in the past. And I felt frustrated because the two men believed the only way to be accepted in society was to be something they weren't, which was trousseaux.In the summer of 1963 two young men, Nines Del Mar and Jack Twist, meet when they find work sheep-herding for the summer on Bareback Mountain. The two quickly form a friendship that eventually develops Into something more. They become mentally and physically Involved with one another. I believe the director's purpose of this film was to open the viewer's eyes, showing them that you cannot choose who fall in love with. The idea that ‘sexuality is not a choice' is developed in the film because the two men eave a perfectly fine life, they both had a loving wife and a family, but they were happiest when together.A close up of Nines' face shows him staring out of the window, trying to pass time by flicking his lighter whilst waiting for Jack to arrive at his house. You can see in his expression that he is excited; his eyes keep looking around as If he Is searching for Jack. This shot told the audience how much Nines cared for and missed Jack, because you saw different a side of Nines, a side where he was excited and nervous, the audience never saw this side of him when he was with is wife.I was happy when I saw Nines not being able to control his emotions towards Jack, it gave me faith that true love and happiness does exist. But I also felt extremely sorry the men's wife's, I felt as though they were using their wife's as a shield from reality, as they were afraid of what might happen to them if anyone found out about their relationship with one another. N o matter how much they tried to stay apart, they would always come back to each other. This is another way the idea ‘sexuality is not a choice' is developed in the film. The dialogue â€Å"l wish I could quit you† is said by Jack Twist.This quote reinforces the fact that Jack couldn't stay away from Nines, he wishes he didn't feel the way he felt about Nines, and he wishes that he could Just stop having the desire to see him, but he Just cannot ‘quit' him. He would rather be living with his wife, but he loves Nines so he can't resist seeing him. It shows that Jack would change himself so that he could fit Into society, If he was able to. This made me feel really upset. I have been taught from a very young age to always be yourself around others, even though they shamed of who he was.With all this being said, it makes me proud that the awareness and acceptance of the LIGHT community is growing greater each year. Just last year, on the 17th of April in 2013, an Amen dment Bill allowing same-sex couples to marry in New Zealand passed the final reading. It gives me great pleasure knowing that society is becoming more susceptible to diversity. But still to this day people still suffer from this fear of not being accepted, and it is very hard for them to ‘come out' about their sexuality to the public.I have had quite a few friends who have struggled with this issue. I have noticed they have all been scared of what their parents might think, say, or do. They are afraid that they will be a disappointment to the family. I think it is absolutely absurd for a parent to ‘disown' their own child because they are attracted to a different gender. I am sure that if their child could choose who they were to fall in love with, they would choose someone that their parents would approve of. I am truly disgusted that this ‘disowning happens still to this day.I would recommend Bareback Mountain to year 12 students because not only is it a great f ilm, it will teach, and further their understanding of the idea ‘sexuality is not a choice. ‘ I think that emotional students will particularly benefit in watching this film, as they will allow the film to affect them, and they will wonder about the deeper meanings in the film. I believe that this film could even change some people's opinions about homosexuals, because they will come to agree with the films strong message, ‘sexuality is not a choice. ‘

Strategies for Positive Thinking

Much of what we experience in our life depends on what we pay attention to. Every day, some things may go right and some things may go wrong. If we give more attention to the things that go right and dwell on those things, you’ll experience more happiness. 1. Think constructively. For positive thinking to truly make a difference in our life, we must replace negative thoughts as they occur. Most important, however, is the need to get whatever benefits we can out of the negative thought before we erase it from our mind. Instead of ignoring our negative thought and hoping it will go away, ask ourself if the critic inside of us is trying to teach you something valuable. Take note of the lesson, and then quickly discard the negative thought. Replace it with a positive perspective on the same situation. * Whenever we experience negative thinking, we have to ask ourself: â€Å"What else could this mean? † If someone treats us unfairly, it could mean that they don’t like us very much. But it probably means they’re just having a bad day. How can you help? Do you see how this question can change our entire outlook? . Use positive affirmations. Often, when faced with a stressful situation, we resort to a pattern of thinking and behaving that has become a habit. How do we create new habits that support our success instead of sabotaging it? Positive affirmations are the key. * Write out the things we want in life and the qualities we want to possess. Write these statements in the present tense, and use positive language. Repeat these statements to ourselves over and over again. WE have to do this every day, and before long we’ll strongly believe the words of the affirmation we’ve created for ourselves. If a habit of thinking is holding one back, what’s stopping one from creating a new habit? Try this immediately and experience its power for oneself. 3. Smile and be thankful. * Smile and greet everyone we meet warmly. Smiles are contagious, and we’ll instantly begin to feel a difference inside ourself. * Pause throughout the day to think about things that we are grateful for. The more we practice gratitude, the better we’ll feel about life and about ourself. 42. Surround ourself with positive people. Most people who soar to incredible heights of ccomplishment in their lives do so because they surround themselves with positive, encouraging people. It’s hard to have a positive outlook when everyone around us is complaining all the time. * If we surround ourself with people who routinely seek the good inside us, we’ll begin to do the same. Spend less time with negative people and more time with those who speak words of support into our life. If we do, we’ll experience greater power, self-confidence and joy. While my top five strengths came as no surprise to me I nonetheless feel a heightened consciousness of my natural talents. My strongest asset, according to StrengthFinder is an accepting awareness of others paired with the ability to include them. This strength goes hand in hand with the developer theme, my next talent on the list, which describes the apability to recognize and cultivate potential in others. Discipline, consistency, and responsibility, my last three items on the top five list are strengths that indicate routine, structure, and adherence to stable values and commitments. As a freshman at CSUN I believe a clear understanding of my natural abilities can help me focus on my strengths and assist in the selection of a customized career plan, thus aiding my successful education and career. Including and developing others, will help me socially, while discipline, consistency, and responsibility can serve me academically, nd culturally at CSUN and in my future. It would seem that my includer talent enables me to help others that might be new in a situation or place. When I first came to CSUN I didnt know anybody. I had met with Jeff Stork, the Womens Volleyball coach once, and had been introduced to the girls on the team. I felt insecure and intimidated at first, but overcame these feelings quickly and bonded with all my team mates. A few weeks ago, Coach Stork informed us that three recruits were coming to visit campus and check out the Matador Volleyball program. I volunteered to guide the prospective new players, and truly enjoyed being able to share my experiences with them. It came naturally to me to try to include the girls, and make them familiar with everything that I had experienced as new, scary and strange. Furthermore I enjoyed introducing them to my current team, take them around campus, and generally make them feel accepted and welcome. After learning about my natural talent of including others, I feel drawn to situations where I can utilize this strength. There may be a welcome committee hat I could Join, to help newcomers transitions into our college as smooth as possible by getting them introduced and involved in existing groups, after-curricular activities or sports programs. I feel I could be a true asset in that aspect. Another one of my strengths is the talent of developing, which would also aide in recognizing and cultivating potential in others in situations where they might feel new, unfamiliar or even excluded. I really enjoyed meeting with my career counsellor because she not only advised me about my talents, but also assisted in planning my lasses, I believe I would appreciate being able to give sound advice to other, new students. One of my strong suits has always been tuning into the emotions and needs of other people, therefore I trust that a sort of mentorship would suit me perfect, and allow me to utilize my character strength best. My senior high school year I was able to coach a middle school co-ed volleyball team in my home town. Not only was this experience one of my fondest memories, as I enjoyed encouraging and nurturing the youngsters, it also opened my eyes to a coaching or possibly teaching areer, which I find very intriguing. Discipline, consistency, and responsibility are traits that imply structure, adherence to clear rules, and commitment to values. These strengths can certainly benefit me in academically, here at CSUN. The discipline theme for example comes into play in detail orientation. Even as a child I have always pursued meticulous detail and perfection, and to this day precision is a core part of who I am. An important strength that applied in a time of challenge is consistency. I have played volleyball since I was in third grade. During my freshman year in high school I played JV until the varsity team made the playoffs, at which time I was moved up to varsity by their coach. Since sophomore year I was then on varsity. The problem I experienced was with the varsity coach, who had a daughter on the team, and did everything in her power to pad the stats in her daughters favor. The setters were even instructed to only set to the daughter so she could get all the kills. It was painfully obvious that there was no equal opportunity on the team, nor was playing time based on capability and performance. All that mattered to the coach was to push her daughter n the foreground, while slighting everybody else, including myself. It was very difficult for me to accept the fact that the whole team suffered under the favoritism displayed by our coach. My conviction of equality, especially on a team-sport team, made it challenging for me to stay on the team. I was frequently approached by strangers from the audience and even opponents coaches inquiring about the reason behind my sitting on the bench. Quite honestly, I had no good response to these questions, as I personally agreed with them. While the coachs daughter has lways been a good player, I felt that the coach was trying to bend the rules, and tip the scales in favor of her own daughter, which was unacceptable to me. My own mother begged me to quit the team, but I stuck it out. After all, I had committed to playing the whole season, and was not about to quit half way through. It is difficult for me to explain the pain this preferential treatment caused me. Today, I can easily see that my StrengthFinder character trait of consistency was what drove me back then. I value equality, and have little tolerance for individuals who bend the rules to it their situation, or benefit themselves. It was also the strength of consistency that helped me coach my own team. Having been on a team that was ruled by unequal treatment made me more aware of equality, and I applied my personal experiences when I coached my own team. In the future I would like to continue coaching, as I feel very strongly that my high school dealings with that coach made me a stronger person and athlete. Only now I realize that consistency is one of my top five character strengths, and therefore part of what makes me, me.
